December 4, 1966: Nemo and his handler were at their post at the Tan Son Nhut Air Base. Nemo alerted and was released to attack enemy troops who had evaded earlier detection. Nemo and his handler were wounded during the attack.
Although severely injured, Nemo protected his handler by crawling across his body and guarding him from anyone who approached them. Nemo had sustained a gunshot wound to his face resulting in the loss of his right eye.
Nemo was credited with saving his handler's life and on June 23rd, 1967, Nemo was returned to the United States as the first sentry dog officially retired from active duty.
Nemo's permanent retirement kennel was located at the Department of Defense Dog Center, Lackland, AFB, Texas.
Sentry Dog Nemo died in December 1972 at the Lackland AFB at age 11 of natural causes. Click here to learn more about this canine hero.
